Alex Bartleet & Wawa Wang Breathing Grass

Proposal

Ever felt the earth move? We haven’t. So we thought we’d build something to provide a more specific visual. It’s all too easy to forget that we’re standing on a living, breathing section of space and so our plan is to pay homage to the planet we’re lucky enough to occupy. We want to create a space in Western Park where the ground will literally rise and fall in time with her breathing. Nothing will accentuate this strangely mesmerizing rhythm more than the dead of night. This one’s for you, earth. Thanks for being great.

Artist Bio

Alexander Bartleet studied Visual Arts at Auckland University of Technology and was first recognised when he was judged Mazda Emerging Artist of the Year in 2007. He is better known for his assemblage sculpture works using thousands of real objects.

Wawa Wang was made in Taiwan and assembled in Auckland. He studied and trained at Rowandale Primary, where he was recognized with two gold stars and a smiley face for his piece 'Finger painting in Room 6'. From the best of our knowledge, it continues to be a part of the schools permanent collection. However, his following piece - 'Clay cup with my face on it' , was not so well received by critics. This resulted in a drastic career change, where he went off and completed a Bachelor of Communication Studies at AUT. We look forward to Wawa's return, and for his sake, we hope he can shake-off his one-art wonder label.
