Sustainable Coastlines & Alex Bartleet New Light

In conjunction with the event each year, Art in the Dark runs an environmental education programme in local schools. This year, Art in the Dark is collaborating with the Sustainable Coastlines Charitable Trust and 2013 Wallace Award Nominee artist Alex Bartleet to raise awareness of the problem of litter in our oceans with the New Light project.

The New Light Project

A talented bunch of students from Campbells Bay School, Freemans Bay School, Grey Lynn School, Ponsonby Primary, Ponsonby Intermediate, Pt Chevalier School, Richmond Rd Primary and Westmere School are particpating in New Light.

The project involves:

* Educational workshops about plastic in the ocean

* Boat trips to Rangitoto Island to participate in beach cleanups

* Creating an installation for Art in the Dark using the plastic rubbish collected from Rangitoto Island.

The installation, conceptualized by Sustainable Coastlines and artist Alex Bartleet, will be formed by joining together the different artworks made by each school like a giant 3-D jigsaw, creating a mystery sea creature that will be unveiled in Western Park on the 7th of November.

A timelapse film of this project – with original music by Sven Pettersen – will accompany the installation in Western Park.
