Art in the Dark is very proud to announce the winners of the Philips Lighting Design Competition, in association with AUT.

After much deliberation over all the bright and brilliant entries, three projects were chosen to get the sought-after Philips Lighting products and prize packs.

In keeping with the immersive nature of Art in the Dark is ‘Out of the Dark’ by Angus Muir and Alexandra Heaney, with James Pendergrast. Giving visitors the chance to take five and have a good beanbag sink under a beautiful canopy, Western Park will have the ultimate chill-out zone.

Nicholas O’Rourke and Sophy Leang will be using the Philips Lighting products to give Art in the Dark attendees a chance to see some Western Park history in motion. After discovering waterways on old surveys of the Ponsonby area, they will construct a river of lights that will flow through the city’s backyard, channeling the fastest way to the ocean through the park’s complex contours.

Jae Hyeon Seong’s piece comes with a concept we can all relate to: The notion of being torn between past attachments and future possibilities. A prism of light borrowed from the similar colour palettes of sunset and sunrise will fall from the installation, while the sound of heavy rain acts as white noise. Some serious light for thought for those strolling through the park.

Art in the Dark 2012 already looks like it's set to be pretty spectacular, so get the date in your diary and come and experience the best and brightest outdoor art New Zealand has to offer.
